Technology Integration

Functional Printed Electronics and PCB Design

About the track

Description

This introductory course simultaneously covers concepts of Functional Printed Electronics and PCB design. Students will create a basic design integrating these two technologies and then build a demonstration prototype. The third day will take place at INTI facilities, students will gain hands-on experience in the printed electronics lab and the electronic board assembly pilot plant.

Track goal

The goal is to offer the student concepts of Functional Printed Electronics Technology and its applications. At the same time, concepts of PCB design will be covered, including recommendations and the use of KiCad design software. The practical activity aims to give students hands-on experience with the technologies and concepts discussed.

Prerequisites

  • Laptop with KiCad and Inkscape installed.
  • Basic concepts of electronic circuits and PCBs.

Minimum content

  • Concepts of functional printed electronics.
  • Applications of functional printed electronics.
  • Design of flexible printed resistive sensors (FSRs).
  • Manufacturing processes and integration of FSRs.
  • Characterization of FSRs.
  • Basic concepts of printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Best practices in PCB design.
  • Use of PCB design software (KiCad).
  • PCB assembly (automated and manual).

Hands-on project

We will work on the analysis and design of a resistive strain sensor printed on a flexible substrate. We will also design and assemble a small printed circuit and finally connect both to operate the demonstrator.

Modality

On Monday and Tuesday, theoretical concepts and design software will be covered at UTN. On Wednesday, activities will take place in the INTI labs.
